3 OF 4 UNIONS SHOW UP FOR HEARING
LOW KEY, PEACEFUL TURNOUT OF CITY EMPLOYEES AT FIRST BUDGET HEARING.

In stark contrast to the last protest rally earlier this year at City Hall, the rally by City employees this time was a low key affair that had representatives of the Police and AFSME unions show up wearing a unifying Tee Shirt, and lining up to express in often time heartfelt speeches to the City Commission why they felt that after 4 years of having been subjected to pay and benefit cuts, that now, since they City was once again solvent, they should receive some of those pay and benefit cuts back.

Missing from this show of unity were the members of the IAFF, the fire fighters union.

The Fraternal Order of Police, who several months ago showed up with the Regaladomobile that FOP President Javier Ortiz drives around the City, decided to up the ante by creating a Miami Monopoly billboard on a traveling trailer. City Manager Danny Alfonso, got the honor of having his face planted on the billboard.

There were a number of issues raised before the City Commission above and beyond the headline grabbing dispute over the hiring of 100 new cops and the request by Commissioner Hardemon for $2 million for a new anti-poverty program in Liberty City, but I’m going to refrain from wading into the issues until I’ve had an opportunity to review the tape of the meeting and obtain some documents that I’ve made a request for.

Two week from now will be the critical 2nd budget meeting and that’s the meeting that folks need to focus on. Here are a few photos from today’s budget hearing.
