WHEN THE TOURISTS GET OFF THE TOUR BUSES ON CALLE OCHO, THIS IS WHAT THEY SEE

Reinaldo “Ray” Valdes is a long-time community activist who lives in Little Havana. Over the last year he’s been periodically including me in emails he’s been sending to a list of folks - including District 3 Commissioner Frank Carollo - with photos that he takes along Calle Ocho showing just how trashy the condition of the sidewalks and the whole area have become.

Somehow though, Ray’s efforts in sending out these photos doesn’t seem to make any difference. Nothing seems to change. Ray keeps taking and sending photos, and all they really show is that no one at City Hall is paying attention.

Calle Ocho gets thousands of tourists visiting every week.  Most of them get off tour buses, walk around for a couple blocks, take photos, buy some trinkets, or eat a Cuban sandwich at one of several restaurants in the neighborhood, go watch the old men play Dominos in Domino Park and then leave.

The photos below were all taken in the last 45 days, and show what the tourists see as they walk around, and what they sometimes end up photographing to take back home and show their family and friends.

I went down a couple nights ago to take a personal look, and the photos really do reflect the condition of the area.  If nothing else, the sidewalks could use a really good pressure cleaning, and the trash does pile up.

It’s really embarrassing for folks in Little Havana to see how their tax dollars AREN’T being spent, right Commissioner Carollo? This is the heart of your District and you should be demanding the City Manager to do right by your constituents and clean this street up!

Hat’s off to Reinaldo “Ray” Valdes for caring enough to keep taking the photos!
