GIVING THE CITY AWAY

IN ANOTHER DEAL THAT MAKES YOU WONDER WHO IS PROTECTING THE CITIZENS AGAINST PLUNDER OF THIS MAGNITUDE, THE REGALADO ADMINISTRATION LOOKS READY TO GIVE AWAY A CITY PARK AND A CITY STREET WORTH MILLIONS FOR A  PIECE OF RAILROAD SIDING LAND AND $500,000

It’s a tale of two cities.

In one city, a progressive, forward thinking development company - let’s call them Squire -  decide that in an effort to set a good example, they will enter into a community benefits agreement to build a fire station - on their dime - and lease it to the city for almost a pittance, in an effort not only to insure that their property is protected, but also as a way “to set an example for others by providing a public benefit as part of a private project.”

In the other city, a group of rapacious developers - let’s call them All Aboard Florida -  who’ve already received a commitment for millions in tax increment funds, as well as a sweetheart deal for an entire city block they got a below market value from the SEOPW CRA in order to build a monster parking garage, now wants the city to give them a city park and a city street so that they can building two additional high-rise “Supertowers”  as part of their project.

One of those “Supertowers” would be for a 750 room hotel, and the other would be for 800,000 square feet of office space.  The value of both of these building would be at least $100 - $150 million dollars.

In return for this city park and city street - literally worth millions, before the air rights are even considered, that they need to build these “Supertowers,” the All Aboard Florida developers are willing to give the city a half acre piece of railroad siding next to the railroad tracks that allow cargo containers to be moved to and from the port to the staging area west of the airport, along with $500,000 towards the construction of a new fire station in the area - which a dollar to a donut says will probably be built on the vacant piece of railroad siding that’s currently being used for construction material and dirt deposit.

How, you ask could two so dissimilar proposals be considered by the same city, at the same time, and on projects that are literally less than a mile apart?

In part, the answer to that question is that one of these projects takes place in Miami, and the other takes place within the boundaries of the SEOPW CRA, where the habit of screwing over what’s left of the original Black residents continues to be considered one of the benefits of public office for that District’s Commissioner.

One project was developed by a major, world-class development company that decided that it was probably cheaper in the long run to build their project without making efforts to secure sweetheart deals or tax benefits of any kind because by the time they got through having to bribe and pay off everyone to get those deals it would have been a lot cheaper to just build their project without these deals.

The other project was undertaken by a rapacious gang who started out by securing a behind the scene sweetheart deal with the SEOPW CRA that essentially gave them an entire city block for far less than the market value of the property, and then they came back to the SEOPW CRA a second time for tax increment funds (TIF) - TIF money is actually money that would be going to the city and county’s General Revenue Funds were it not supposed to be earmarked for projects to remove slum and blight, such as building affordable housing - and now, after having figured out that by hiring a couple family members of one City Commissioner, and giving a hand job or two to several other city commissioners, along with a couple sizable campaign contributions to the ECO of the Mayor’s daughter’s campaign for County Mayor, and thousands more to Francis Suarez’s campaign for Mayor of Miami, they figured that the least that they should get for all of these “community benefits” they’ve sprinkled around like fairy dust is a city park, a city street and millions of dollars in air rights, because as I say

It’s Miami, Bitches!

THIS GIVEAWAY WILL COME BEFORE THE PZAB BOARD ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15TH, AT 6:30 PM

UPDATE

A review of the Legistar files on the city’s website indicates that not a single backup document, including property appraisals, traffic studies, or any other documents that would provide some rational explanation for this land swap is part of the PZAB item on Wednesday’s agenda.
