THE BISHOP CLEANED KEON’S CLOCK
A COMMUNITY MEETING CALLED TO DISCUSS THE PISS POOR DEAL THAT CITY COMMISSIONER KEON HARDEMON MADE WITH THE MIAMI WORLDCENTER DEVELOPERS ON BEHALF OF THE RESIDENTS OF OVERTOWN SHOWED THAT YOUNG KEON IS NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME, AND THAT BISHOP JAMES ADAMS IS SOMEONE WHO DOESN’T SUFFER FOOLS LIGHTLY
PART I
ARCHIVES2014_ARCHIVES.html

First, I must apologize to Bishop James Adams and the members of the St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church for calling out “Bullshit,” when Commissioner Hardemon kept repeating that the he only did the “deal” with Nitin Motwani and the Worldcenter Development Group because they were on the verge of killing the deal.  This is an issue that requires a serious article, which I will not be able to write tonight, but I hope to address by next week.

Today’s story is about what happened when over 200 folks showed up at St. James Institutional Missionary Baptist Church on Thursday night to discuss the crappy deal that Commissioner Keon Hardemon got his fellow Commissioners - known as the other 4 Dwarfs - to approve and then tried to defend at this meeting.

The deal to give the Worldcenter Development Group $90 million in Tax Increment Funds, also known as TIFF Funds, was a deal largely negotiated in secret, and voted on at a hastily called meeting on December 29th of the SEOPW CRA, after previous meetings scheduled for December were cancelled. There’s nothing like having a meeting between Christmas and New Year’s Day when many folks are away to try and slip something nasty by folks.

The deal was flawed at almost every turn, including Hardemon’s  admission that portions of the agreement were still being negotiated hours before the beginning of the meeting.

That admission should have prompted at least one of the other Commissioner’s to be on the side of the citizens by invoking the 5 Day Rule so that folks could have had some opportunity to read just what kind of deal Hardemon had negotiated behind closed doors.  But, since ALL the Commissioners were in one way or another co-conspirators in screwing the folks of Overtown, while crawling over each other to make sure that portions of their District’s were included in the deal - even though CRA money is by law not supposed to be spent to benefit other parts of the City not within the CRA boundaries, none of them cared about passing a deal that even they hadn’t read.

The meeting at the church tonight was organized so that folks could talk about what the deal meant - or worse - did not mean for the residents of Overtown, who as I have written on too many occasions keep getting screwed by these bullshit deals.

The Commissioner showed up, and out of respect, Bishop Adams gave the Commissioner an opportunity to speak.

The tape below starts with Neil Shriver, the Assistant Director of the SEOPW CRA, acting as the opening act to try and counter claims made by Mike Hill, an organizer for UNITE HERE, whose analysis of the agreement had been distributed to the attendees at the beginning of the meeting pointing out some of the worst parts of the agreement that he had discovered.

Here is that document.

I apologize for the sound, but I was at the back of the room, and I boosted the level up so that I could pick up the sound. You might have to adjust your sound level if it’s too high for you.

There are any number of things I could say about the Commissioner’s behavior, but I’ll pass, and the the tape speak for itself.

There are a lot of negative things being revealed now about the Worldcenter Agreement approved by the Miami City Commission last year, among them is the fact that portions of the agreement, as well as the way it was passed have now been recognized as illegal, and I have been told that the agreement will be coming back up for a revote in February.  Probably February 26th, although I haven’t confirmed that.

What this means for the CRA deal that Hardemon negotiated is unclear, but if the Commissioner really cares for the people of Overtown, then he needs to seize this opportunity to revoke the crappy deal he negotiated - since if the original Development Agreement is illegal, then everything that has occurred since then based on that agreement should be considered illegal too, and invite members of the community to join him and redo the negotiations with the developers in a way that actually benefit his community.

If he doesn’t, then I think folks really need to think about mounting a recall action to get him out of office before he ends up screwing everybody so badly that one day in the not too distant future a sign will hang at the edges of Overtown that says:

This used to be the place where Miami’s Black folks lived before their City Commissioner sold them out

so that rich white folks could build condo towers

and get richer.

It’s Miami, Bitches!
