COMMISSIONER SARNOFF ADMITS THAT WIFEY’S FOUNDATION DOESN’T HAVE ANY MORE MONEY FOR
THE HOMELESS MAT PROGRAM - SO MUCH FOR THEIR CLAIMS OF HER LEADERSHIP PROWESS AND FUNDRAISING ABILITY WHEN IT COMES TO ‘FIGHTING FOR A BETTER LIFE FOR ALL SOUTH FLORIDIANS.”
PART V
THE BEARD’S FOUNDATION HAS RUN OUT OF MONEY

One of the big items discussed at last week’s County Commission meeting was the the problem of homelessness in Miami.

The Downtown Development Authority (DDA), led by the well known humanitarian and champion of the underdog Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, came before the Commission to argue that the County’s Homeless Trust, led by the equally venerated champion of public charity and love of family, lobbyist Ron Book, should be the agency to pay for a City of Miami sponsored program that provided sleeping matts and short term care for the chronically homeless people who congregate in downtown Miami.

Book in turn argued that the program was a “warehousing” program that the Trust would never fund.

The problem, beyond who would fund this program, is that in typical City of Miami fashion, the DDA waited until there were only 30 days left before the money ran out before coming to the County Commission to get them to make the Trust put up the money.

Given the political minefield of going against Ron Book, who is also the County’s principal lobbyist, the County Commission decided that the best short term solution to this cat fight between Sarnoff and Book was to call for the Trust to “consider” funding the program and issue a report in 90 days.

Understandably, this means there’s a real possibility that money to fund the City’s Matt Program will run out before this item is revisited by the County Commission. In the Miami Herald story, Commissioner Sarnoff, whose never been hesitant in passing the buck and laying the blame elsewhere when it suited him stated:

“There’s a 60 day gap where there’s no funding, so I guess 115 people are going to be on the street unless somebody comes up with a solution.”

Since Sarnoff is the principal architect and promoter of this program, you would think that the “somebody” who needs to come up with a solution would be him. This is his baby, only now, like a regular deadbeat father, he trying to lay the costs of taking care of his baby on to someone else.

Furthermore, since most of the homeless people congregate within the the OMNI and SEOPW CRA Districts, you might think that Sarnoff would turn to those agencies for support, especially since he is the Chairman of the OMNI CRA and that both of these CRA’s have shown absolutely no hesitancy in forking over tens of millions of dollars of Tax Increment Funds (TIFF) intended to eliminate slum and blight as “gifts” to to rich developers.

Additionally, back in 2012, when the DDA decided to do Mickey Arinson and the AAA Arena a favor by chasing the homeless away from NE 7th and 8th Street on the westside of the Boulevard, Sarnoff, and the DDA had no problem in getting Commissioner Richard Dunn, then the Chairman of the SEOPW CRA to cough up $75,000 to buy street planters as a way to create barriers on those streets so as to block the homeless from gathering, or from church groups to provide them with meals.

Lastly, as I wrote only days ago, Sarnoff’s OMNI CRA just announced that they are going to spend $400,000 so that the dogs owned by the residents of the high-rise condos lining North Bayshore Drive can shit on Astro Turf at the new Dog Park they are going to build inside Margaret Pace Park.

Sarnoff has always shown a willingness to freely spend public money on dogs - as of 2012 he had spent over $500,000 to redesign and refurbish the dog park across the street from his home in Coconut Grove on 3 separate occasions, and that doesn’t include the new round of expenditures to redesign the park once again to deal with the toxic waste found in the park since 2012.

While public money is an obvious source of funding, there is also the foundation that Sarnoff’s wife supposedly created last year as a reflection of her commitment to end homelessness.

Unfortunately, the most interesting revelation in the Herald article was the claim that, “Sarnoff said his wife’s nonprofit doesn’t have the cash to fund Camillus House mats for the next two months.”

Really?  After all the self-generated promotion, and a fancy award from Camillus House it turns out that there’s  no cash left in the bank?

How could that be?

Teresa Sarnoff has made End Homelessness Now the centerpiece of both her campaign, and of her commitment “to fighting for a better life for all South Floridians.” She makes that claim very clearly at the bottom of the largely phony self-promotional claptrap on her campaign website.

As uplifting and courageous as this dedication by Teresa Sarnoff to dedicate her life for worth causes so that we can all have better lives, there is no public record of Teresa Sarnoff demonstrating even a minuscule amount of interest or involvement in dealing with any of the component parts of the homeless issue before her husband convinced her to run for his seat on the City Commission.

Nor is there any evidence that this so-called foundation that was created so that Teresa Sarnoff could burnish her image was anything other but a naked effort on the part of her husband to lean on, and take money from a very small group of developers who for who he was willing to trade favors in return for their donations.

As I and others have repeatedly said over the last few months, if her last name was Smith, and not Sarnoff, she couldn’t get elected dog catcher, much less a Miami City Commissioner, and she would have never dared attempt to lay claim to being considered a leader in dealing with the City of Miami’s  homelessness problem.

If Teresa Sarnoff was the real champion of the homeless that she claims to be, she would have gotten her ass out on the street to collect more money for her foundation once she learned of the current financial problems with the Matt Program.

But then again, she was never the one who raised the money. The money was raised in $5,000 and $10,000 increments by Marc from HIS developer pals, and in recent weeks it’s become evident that he is now tap dancing as fast as he can to throw a couple of these same developer pals under the bus as a way to inoculate himself against the growing rumors that he’s alleged to be under serious investigation for peddling his vote for donations to his and her foundation, and for campaign cash for Teresa.

It’s Miami, Bitches!
