THE NEW CAROLLO AMENDMENT

Lost in all the hoopla over the Bayside/Skyrise deal at last week’s Commission meeting was the fact that after a two year effort - prompted by the bad behavior of the developers associated with the Flagstone project on Watson Island, City Commissioner Frank Carollo, with a little help from his fellow Commissioners finally accomplished his goal of having a change to the City Charter go on the August ballot limiting developers who seek approval from the city to build a project on city owned property - with several exemptions - to either start construction within 4 years, or be forced to to return for another vote of approval by the voters.

This is a good change to the Charter, and the only unfortunate thing about it is that Carollo couldn’t haven gotten this passed two years earlier, so that it would have forced the Flagstone developers to to go before the voters agin after the almost 13 years that their failure to build on Watson Island dragged on.

If the voters pass this change it will make the 2nd Amendment to the City Charter proposed by a Carollo brother to make those developers eying the City’s waterfront to be accountable to the citizens.
