THE QUEEN OF SWAG IS WORKING IT
MIAMI-DADE’S STATE ATTORNEY KATHERINE FERNANDEZ-RUNDLE, HAS ACCEPTED AT LEAST $62,611.75 IN GIFTS SINCE 2008, INCLUDING ROSES AND CHOCOLATE FROM OJ SIMPSON’S MIAMI BFF, AND HEAT PLAYOFF TICKETS FROM MIAMI HEAT LOBBYIST JORGE LUIS LOPEZ

State law requires top public officials to report the acceptance of all gifts over $100 in value. The reports are submitted on what are commonly referred to as FORM 9‘s, and they are filed with the Florida Commission on Ethics at the end of every quarter.

I’n the past I’ve filed several ethics complaints against Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, for their failure to submit FORM 9‘s for trips that they took, and back in 2011, and I also started doing periodic stories on the FORM 9’s that Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle submitted to the Florida Ethics Commission  because of the volume and value of the gifts that I discovered she was accepting and reporting.

FORM 9’s are a double-edged sword. They’re intended as a way to keep track of who is giving politicians gifts and/or free trips, yet at the same time the process is also a way for politicians to legitimize bribes, because if they report these “gifts” it becomes almost impossible to charge them with taking bribes.

When it comes to Katherine Fernandez-Rundle, over the last seven yearsshe accepted an average of $8,800 per year in “gifts” including including jewelry, hotel rooms, limo service, wine, and of course gobs of free tickets to all kinds of events from personal friends, corporate sponsors of events, lobbyists and law firms. She even accepted wine and flowers from OJ Simpson’s best Miami friend, Tom Scotto.

Never heard of Tom Scotto?  Well, here’s what I wrote back in 2011 when I called him up after I discovered he had sent Fernandez-Rundle chocolate and roses worth approximately $125.

Tom Scotto was O J Simpson’s best pal during his Miami

years, as well as being OJ’s frequent golf partner. It was

Scotto’s wedding in Las Vegas, where OJ was supposed

to be the best man, that led to the fateful encounter in the

hotel room that resulted in OJ currently serving 33 years in

a Nevada prison for armed robbery.

Being OJ’s pal doesn’t make Scotto a bad guy, in fact, it takes

some gumption to be pals with a guy like OJ, just like it takes

some gumption to be my pal on occasion.

When I asked him if he was the same Tom Scotto who gave

Fernandez-Rundle the flowers and candy, he said that he was,

and that while he didn’t consider her a close friend, ”She has

helped me out a few times.”

While Scotto balked at telling me how Fernandez-Rundle had helped him out a few times, you got to wonder if we apply a sliding scale to the value of gifts received by Fernandez-Rundle, that if she helped Scotto out a few times and got a box of chocolates and some flowers worth $125, what might she have done for Jorge Luis Lopez.

Lopez is considered to be Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s principal bag man by some, and he’s also the lobbyist for the Miami Heat organization. In her June 2014 report Fernandez-Rundle listed receiving tickets worth $1550 to 1 Heat Semi-Finals game, and 1 Heat Finals game, from Lopez. I’ll go out on a limb and presume that when she got 2 tickets to the Semi-Finals game she took her boyfriend, attorney David Efrom.

NOTE TO NEWS MEDIA:  If Jorge Luis Lopez gave Fernandez-Rundle $1550 worth of tickets to two play-off games, just what kind of party favors do you think he might have given to the members of the Miami-Dade County Commission who voted to extend the Heat’s contract for the AAA Arena on terms that a lot of folks believe screwed the taxpayers? Just remember, if you get off your asses and discover that this is a really big story, it was Al Crespo at The Crespogram Report who told you to go looking.

As the lobbyist for the Miami Heat, Jorge Luis Lopez and his sons show off the 3 Championship rings he received for being part of “the Heat Team.”  I’ve been repeatedly told by a very reputable source that there are at least 3 politicians who’ve also received rings for also being part of “the Heat Team,” and who’ve never reported or acknowledged receiving them. If that’s true, anybody want to guess who those 3 politicians are?

As for Fernandez-Rundle, in addition to the gifts described above, over the years Fernandez-Rundle also took $1000 worth of tickets to the Latin Songwriters Hall Of Fame Awards, $1400 worth of tickets to the South Beach Food and Wine Festival, 2 tickets valued at $5000 to the 7th Annual Arsht Center Anniversary, a one night stay in a hotel with meals valued at $350 to celebrate Marsha Madonsky’s birthday, a total of 6 tickets valued at $440 to the Latin Billboard Awards, 2 tickets valued at $749 to the Food and Wine “Bubble Q” Festival, 2 tickets valued at $1950 to the XLIV Pro Football Hall Of Fame Luncheon, 2 dinners valued at $300 for the opening of the Viceroy restaurant, a $200 necklace, 2 tickets valued at $200 to the Annual Florida Democratic Party Jefferson Jackson Dinner, and 2 tickets valued at $450 to the Democratic National Convention Leadership 2014 Blue Gala. The combined total of these tickets and gifts comes to $12,039.00.

When it comes to gifts, Fernandez-Rundle just absolutely takes the cake, and the wine, and the flowers, and the limo rides and the party tickets and just about every fucking thing else that somebody waves in front of her nose, including gifts from lawyers and law firms that either have, or might have to defend a client against charges brought by her office.

You would be hard pressed to see this kind of behavior by State Attorneys elsewhere or in the private sector where reputable companies put strict limits on the gifts that it’s top management are allowed to receive.

The State Attorney for Miami-Dade County is entrusted with prosecuting wrong-doers, and therefore responsible for helping to set a tone of civic probity for the community. One would expect her to set the highest standards, if for no other reason to protect herself and her office against an implication of impropriety. In that regard, there should be a sign outside her office that says in BIG, BOLD LETTERS,

WE DON’T ACCEPT ANYTHING FROM ANYONE

That’s the kind of standard you would expect and want a reputable State Attorney to set, and not act like some bimbo TV star with an exaggerated sense of entitlement strolling through the “gift room” of a show biz award and coming out with all the swag she could stuff in her bra, or drag out the door in a “Gift Bag”.

Fernandez-Rundle’s behavior is not only unseemly, but underscores just why I continue to call her the most corrupt elected official in Miami-Dade County!

It’s Miami, Bitches!
